Could AI Change the Future of Animatronics?

For decades, animatronics have followed a relatively simple formula: a character is programmed to move, speak, and react according to a predetermined sequence. Every movement, sound, and interaction is carefully planned in advance. But what happens when an animatronic can actually listen, understand, and respond?

Recent developments in the themed entertainment industry, including Disney’s work with the Olaf animatronic, offer an interesting glimpse into what could be next. By combining artificial intelligence with robotics, animation, voice systems, and show control, physical characters can begin to move beyond simply repeating a programmed performance.

Imagine walking up to a character and having a conversation that isn't exactly the same as the conversation the guest before you had. The character could interpret what you say, determine an appropriate response, and coordinate its voice, facial expressions, and movements to create a more natural interaction. Instead of simply watching an animatronic perform, the guest becomes part of the experience.

This is one area where JETech is particularly interested in exploring the possibilities of AI. We are looking at ways to integrate AI-powered chatbots directly into animatronic characters, allowing them to respond to human input and create one-off interactive experiences. Traditionally, creating this type of interaction could require a human operator to control or guide the character. That creates an obvious bottleneck: there are only so many guests a human can interact with at one time.

AI could potentially remove that limitation. Rather than having an operator determine every response, an AI system could handle individual conversations while the animatronic provides the physical performance. Every guest could potentially have a different interaction, creating experiences that are dynamic rather than completely scripted.

The real challenge, however, is connecting the intelligence of the AI to the physical character. An AI can generate a response almost instantly, but an animatronic still has motors, actuators, mechanical limitations, safety requirements, and carefully designed movement systems. Making those systems work together reliably is where the engineering becomes particularly interesting.

At JETech, we don't see AI as a replacement for animatronics. We see it as a way to give physical characters a new level of intelligence and interaction. By combining AI, robotics, automation, and entertainment technology, we believe it may be possible to create experiences that are different for every guest — without requiring a human operator behind every interaction.

The technology is still evolving, but the possibilities are exciting. The next generation of animatronics may not just perform for guests.

They may actually interact with them.
